Bathroom Vent Types

Bathroom ventilation is essential to maintain a healthy and comfortable environment. The bathroom is a place that is utilized frequently, and can quickly become damp, and humid. Humidity, moisture, and odors can build up in a bathroom, especially after taking a shower, bath or sitting on the toilet. If left unchecked, these conditions can lead to mold and mildew growth, unpleasant odors, and decreased air quality. Without the proper bathroom ventilation, moisture condensation can do serious damage to drywall, wallpaper, window coverings, and cabinetry and may lead to serious mold issues. To combat these issues, it’s important to have a high-quality bathroom venting system in place with a bathroom wall mount or ceiling mount exhaust fan.

The size of the space and the specific bathroom features will determine the appropriate size and rating of your bathrooms fan. The fan rating is measured in cubic feet per minute (CFM), which represents the volume of air that the fan can move per minute. The CFM rating required for a particular bathroom is determined by the room size, the number of fixtures, and the amount of moisture produced. For example, a larger bathroom with a shower, bathtub, and Jacuzzi will require a higher CFM rating than a smaller bathroom with only a sink and toilet.

The bigger the bathroom exhaust fan you have (more CFMs), the larger should the duct diameter be to facilitate all those CFMs. Most bathroom fans use round ducts with 4-inch, 5-inch, 6-inch, 7-inch, 8-inch, and 9-inch diameters. 4-inch and 6-inch ones are the most common ones. Lambro’s LamaFlex ducts and flexible vinyl ducts have diameters of 4” as do all their vent kits.

The motors used in quality energy star rating bathroom fans are designed to be efficient and long-lasting. They are typically rated for continuous use and can run for extended periods without overheating. The motors also feature thermal overload protection, which helps to prevent damage in case of overheating.

In addition to the size and rating, bathroom fans may also include sensors to detect humidity levels and turn the fan on automatically. This is especially useful in bathrooms with a shower, where moisture levels can quickly rise. The sensor will activate the fan when the

humidity level reaches a certain threshold, ensuring that the bathroom remains dry and comfortable.

Bathroom Vents Fan Shower Toilet Duct

Bathroom features such as toilets, sinks, faucets, mirrors, towels, soap, rugs, counters, tiles, porcelain, bathtubs, and other accessories can all impact the efficiency of your bathroom fan. For example, a shower curtain or bath mat can trap moisture and prevent it from being drawn out by the fan through the vent to the outside. A dirty toilet seat, towel, or rug can produce odors that the fan can remove.

Regular cleaning with a toilet brush and toilet cleaner will help to eliminate odors and prevent the buildup of bacteria. Keeping the sink, bathtub, and faucet (s) clean and dry will also help to reduce moisture levels in the bathroom.

A bathroom fan, also known as a bath fan, can help to reduce these issues by drawing the moist air out of the bathroom and expelling it through a vent to the outside. Fan models are available that mount in the ceiling, a wall or the window, but all must vent to the outside. Lambro bath vent kits for bathroom fans are a popular choice. For consumers they can be found at a local big box, hardware store, or online though a number of ecommerce sites including Amazon.

The most common installation method for a bathroom fan is wall-mount, where it is connected to the duct system ending in a vent cap mounted on an exterior wall. However, if space is limited, it may be necessary to install the bathroom fan in the ceiling or use a combination of ceiling and wall-mount if you desire to have more exhaust fans for a large bathroom space.

Bathroom ventilation is so important that residential building codes require at least one openable window in each bathroom. Many local codes also require a bathroom exhaust fan.

A bathroom exhaust fan removes moisture vapors generated from bathing and other activities as well as keeping the bathroom fresh. Without the proper bathroom ventilation moisture condensation can do serious damage to drywall, wallpaper, window coverings, and cabinetry and may lead to serious mold issues. A bathroom exhaust fan keeps the bathroom dry and odor-free. Models are available that mount in the ceiling, a wall or the window, but all must vent to the outside.

NOTE: Make sure your bathroom fans exhaust to the outside, not into an attic. Releasing moisture from bathing that regularly collects on attic surfaces will eventually lead to mold issues and possible structural damage. Moisture weakens the wood by slowly destroying individual wood fibers, layer by layer. Attic moisture can also destroy or retard the performance of an attic’s insulation.

Vent Exterior Bathroom Caps

The most common option for bathroom exhaust fan venting is the ceiling to wall venting option. The second most common is the roof vent installation. The third most common is probably the vertical wall installation. Bathroom exhaust fan venting installation at the soffit, the underside of a roof’s overhang, is utilized less. Check with your local building code regarding a soffit installation because not all municipalities allow this venting option.

When installing a bathroom fan, you need to choose the best ductwork and vents for your venting needs. Lambro makes it easy to select a vent cover / hood vent cover for the vent termination outside of your home whether it is from an outside wall, a soffit or the roof.

Vent covers help keep debris and animals from entering the ductwork and clogging it. Be sure to choose a cover that fits snugly and is weatherproof.

Some common types of vents people consider to use for venting a bathroom exhaust fan:

– Wall vents

Wall vents are one of the most common through-the-wall ventilation options for a bathroom whether or not the bathroom has a window. Most of Lambro’s bathroom venting products work well for either a wall or ceiling bathroom fan installation by going through an exterior wall in order to exhaust moisture and smells to the outside.

– Roof vents

Roof vents are an effective option for a bathroom fan’s exhaust. Roof vents are generally considered easier to install and can be placed more conveniently and flexibly than a new gable ridge or soffit vent.

– Gable vents

Gable vents can technically be used to eliminate the humid air from a bathroom fan. If you’re set on using a gable vent as a discreet exhaust for your bathroom fan, it would be much better to install a new or additional gable vent if there is another available location.

These vents are discreet, and taking advantage of that would keep you from having to add new and possibly unsightly fixtures to your home. Be aware that using a pre-existing gable vent as your exhaust point could significantly restrict airflow, preventing the ventilation system from doing its job of keeping an attic moisture-free. Gable vents can also have a backdraft problem in windy conditions of sucking expelled moisture back into the attic. A damper optimizes the functioning of your ducting and can ease concerns about moisture being blown or sucked back into the attic / home.

– Soffit vents

Like Gable vents, Soffit vents run a risk of sucking expelled moisture back into the attic.

Houses with gable roofs often pair gable vents with soffit vents since they tend to work to regulate the attic’s temperature and humidity with the flow of air. If you block either of the existing soffit or gable vents you can completely throw off the passive ventilation system.

– Ridge vents

Venting moist bathroom air through a ridge vent is not recommended since the moisture can still hit the roof sheathing, and some will fall back into the attic which could lead to mold growth and wood damage.

Each method, venting a bathroom fan through the roof, through a side wall, or out an exterior eave or soffit has its own pros and cons, so it’s important to choose the method that’s right for your home. In each case ducts, vents, vent clamps and connectors will be required.

Roof Venting:

Cons:  A roof vent exterior cover can be more difficult to install than other types of vents. The roof vent needs to be sturdy to withstand the exterior elements. We recommend having a licensed roofer install the bathroom fan roof vent. – It may require more maintenance over time.
