Exhaust Hoods

Lambro HVAC Logo

Lambro is a manufacturer of Exhaust Hoods, which are crucial components in kitchen, bathroom, and dryer ventilation systems. Our HVAC products, also referred to as hood vents, roof vents, caps, or under eve vents, play a vital role in these systems.

When searching for exhaust hoods, vent hoods, or hood vents on Google, consumers may come across information about the consumer product, range hoods, which are installed above cooking ranges and designed to remove grease and odors via an exhaust system.

However, in the HVAC industry, the term “exhaust hoods” has a different meaning. It refers to the end component of a ventilation system that allows air to exit through an exterior wall or roof. These hoods are commonly known as wall/roof caps, roof/wall vents, dryer vent hoods, or simply as vent hoods or exhaust hoods.

The bathroom exhaust hood and its ducts play a vital role in a home’s ventilation system. In older properties like rental apartments, building codes may not require a bathroom fan if there is a window in the bathroom, which means that a bathroom exhaust fan may not be considered a necessary feature unless the bathroom is undergoing renovation. However, in new homes, an exhaust fan in the bathroom is a must-have.

A bathroom exhaust fan helps in keeping the bathroom dry and fresh by removing moisture vapors generated from bathing and other activities. This prevents serious damage to drywall, wallpaper, window coverings, cabinetry, and mold issues. Models for exhaust fans are available for ceiling, wall, or window mounting, but they all must vent outside through an exterior wall or roof. The ceiling or wall mounted exhaust fan must vent to the outside through an exterior wall or roof. This helps to keep the bathroom odor-free and maintain proper ventilation.

The most popular choice for bathroom exhaust fan venting is through an exterior wall, followed by a roof vent installation. Exhaust hood installation at the soffit, the underside of a roof’s overhang, is less common. It is important to check with local building codes before opting for a soffit installation as not all municipalities permit this venting option.

Lambro offers a variety bathroom exhaust hood venting products that are suitable for either wall or ceiling bathroom fan installations. These products are available in white, grey, and brown plastic or aluminum and can fit ducts with diameters ranging from 3″ to 6″. Our wall exhaust hoods ensure proper ventilation and help to keep the bathroom dry and fresh.

According to the International Residential Code (IRC), there are no specific requirements for the length and diameter of bathroom ducts. Bathroom ducts can be made of metal, plastic, or aluminum flex ducts, and their interior surfaces can be either ridged or smooth unlike dryer ducts which must have smooth interior surfaces and be constructed from minimum 0.016-inch-thick rigid metal ducts. The IRC section M1502 Clothes Dryer Exhaust sets these guidelines.

Note that a clothes dryer duct can be used for the exhaust duct of a bathroom or shower fan, but not the other way around.

Typical kit features include:

  • Opening/closing damper prevents outside elements from entering the vent
  • Removable screen
  • UV inhibitor used to help prevent the premature fading of outside exhaust hood
  • Include either hood or cap vents with tail pipe, a trim plate and some type of clamp

To ensure proper ventilation and prevent potential problems, it is important to follow the installation instructions carefully when choosing a dryer vent solution. Moreover, dryer exhaust hoods serve a crucial function in safeguarding your home from fire hazards. To ensure that your dryer vent / exhaust hood is installed correctly and compliant with regulations, it is advisable to adhere to the following guidelines:

  1. Familiarize yourself with local dryer vent codes. These codes may vary by location, but there are generally accepted standards that most jurisdictions follow.
  2. Ensure that your dryer vent meets or surpasses these requirements. This will help you ensure that your dryer vent is properly installed and up to code, keeping your home safe from fire hazards.
  3. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) code 2158 states that clothes dryers must be vented to the outside of the building. The International Residential Code (IRC) M1401.4 requires that clothes dryers be exhausted to the outdoors through an approved duct. The duct material shall be rigid metal, semi-rigid metal duct, rigid nonmetallic duct or other type listed in the dryer manufacturer’s installation instructions.
